Tim Simpson is an artist from the small town of Williamston in the upstate of South Carolina. Tim grew up with an artist father who encouraged him to express himself through art. He started out tracing comic books, but his dad said he needed to create the subject himself and not trace; so, his dad built him a canvas, set up a still-life for him, and Tim did his first oil painting at age nine. As a young man, he wanted to learn more, so he began taking art classes at a local museum school and community college. Taking “core” educational classes for a degree was of little interest to Tim but he loved the focused art classes, especially drawing and color theory. Tim considers drawing and painting an outlet for himself personally, but also for sharing his view of the world with others. When creating a new piece, he retreats into his mind to capture the feeling he personally has for the subject.
Tim works in several mediums but prefers graphite/charcoal and oils. “Using graphite and charcoal allows me to create the real detail I want for some pieces, but I like the forgiveness of and light I can get with oils. I also love the smell of the paint, linseed oil and canvas as they come together.”, Tim says with a smile. But Tim admits the medium he loves most is “the one I’m using at the time”. That’s because he selects it specific to what he wants to create, and it becomes an integral part of how the piece portrays his feeling.
Tim is semi-retired now from his “day job” in carpentry and maintenance, so most days can be found in his art studio, or at his koi pond where he would like to create a version of Monet’s Garden for himself and his wife to enjoy.
